2001 - Military Ideology and Gender Relations in Argentina
LA IDEOLOGIA MILITAR Y LAS RELACIONES DE GÉNERO EN ARGENTINA (Military Ideology and Gender Relations in Argentina). This article was published in: L´Ordinaire Latino Americain. Les années de plomb: deuil et mémoire, 183, Janvier-Mars 2001. Military ideology and gender relations in Argentina explores the ideological and cultural construction of two opposite ideals of “women” which were in “struggle”. According to Dr Hasanbegovic´s research on secondary sources these two ideals of women existed during the 1970s. They corresponded, on one part, to “the ideal woman” embraced by some guerrilla groups, and on the other side, the “ideal woman” promoted by the military. Both models of “women” were shown by the mass media controlled by the military dictatorship (1976-1983) self-named el proceso, as the “bad woman” in the first case, and the “good woman” in the second case. This last ideal was characterized by domestic women, self-concern with beauty and physical appearance, and not interested in activities related to the public sphere. The essay concludes that the “ideal woman” of el proceso was triumphant, and brought about consequences that they are still present in the gender-relations of Argentina.
